2017 Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival
The 2017 Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival will not be similar to any edition before. It is no less than the 50th one. Half a century of projections and awards, of discoveries and recognitions. And above all, of good cinema. Fantastic or horror movies, animation and short films. From Catalonia, Spain, Europe and all around the world, with a particular attention to the North American and to the Asiatic cinema.
And that is why the Sitges Film Festival organisation is finalizing an incredible edition, with great names and with very awaited appointments. All of this will take place from the 5th to the 15th of October, with projections during all the days but with particular relevance during two weekends: the 7-8 and the 14-15 of October.
Big names of the 2017 International Fantastic Film Festival
The big names of the 50th 2017 Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival keep up with this so symbolic edition. For instance, Guillermo del Toro, brilliant winner of the Golden Lion of Venice with ‘The shape of water’. And this one will precisely be the appointment which will open the festival of this year, a story set in the Cold War, built around Elisa, worker in a high safety laboratory where they are doing an experiment classified as secret. The Mexican filmmaker, renowned fan of the Sitges Festival Movie, will fire again the starting gun of the event, like he made in 2006 with another well-known title: ‘ El laberinto del fauno’ (‘Pan’s labyrinth’).
The Great Honorific Prize of this edition will go directly to another celebrity of the big screen: Susan Sarandon. The North American actress, awarded with great recognitions such an Oscar for the best actress in 1995 for ‘Dead Walking Man’, will get a large part of the flashes and will go herself to the projection of one of the movies which made her famous: ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’.
Regarding the international cinema, this edition of the 2017 Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival also serves to pay tribute to Santiago Segura, who will receive the Maquina del Temps (time machine) prize. On the other hand, Álex de la Iglesia, one of the regular of the festival will leave his footprint as ‘ Errementari’, his last production, directed by Paul Urkijo and which will world premiere in this edition.
But the Sitges Film Festival also has a lot of attractions. For instance, the projection of the last movie of Yorgos Lanthimos, a Greek director that arrives to our city after his step by Cannes with ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’ and that makes part of the Official Section of the competition. Among the other Asiatic filmmakers of this edition, Cho Sun-ho (‘A Day’), Takashi Miike (‘Blade of the Immortal’) and Kiyoshi Kurosawa(‘Before We Vanish’) will highlight.
Between the most highlighted Catalan representatives, we should mention Jaume Balagueró with ‘Musa‘ (Muse) or Xavier Gens with ‘La pell freda’ (Cold Skin). Caye Casas and Albert Pintó will add a touch of surrealistic black humour with ‘Matar a Dios’ (To kill God).
